Tens of Algerian fans in South Africa refused to travel back to Algeria

Tens of Algerian fans who are in South Africa for the 2010 World cup tournament have adamantly refused to travel back to Algeria preferring instead to stay in Nelson Mandela's country and for some others to head as “harraga” or clandestine immigrants on ships bound for Australia.

  • A member of the interministerial commission which is in charge of ensuring the air transport of the Algerian fans back to Algeria, Hamouche Belkesmi, said that a census of all the returnees from South Africa was still in progress.
  •
  • He lamely suggested that those fans who stayed behind in South Africa wanted to remain there until the end of the world cup competition.
  •
  • For his part, the chargé d’affaires of the Algerian Consulate in Johannesburg Mr Chaâbani told Echorouk that some Algerian fans had come to the Consulate over the past few days to fulfill the legal procedures for a return to Algeria after losing their passports, their documents and their money during the hectic hubbub of the world cup matches in South African cities.
  •
  • Informed sources say that the number of those Algerian fans who refused to travel back to Algeria is estimated at around 120.
