Terrorist “Salafist Group” kills 12 Mauritanian troops in northern Mauritania

Security and military sources told “Echorouk El Yaoumi” that 12 Mauritanian troops, including an Army officer, had been killed and 10 others injured in an ambush laid to by a terrorist “Salafist Group” to an Army convoy in northern Mauritania. 

• This is the heaviest death toll suffered by the Mauritanian Military since the terrorist attack carried out against an Army outpost in the Maghti locality in the year 2005.

• The terrorist group attacked the Mauritanian troops by surprise inflicting on them severe setbacks and succeeded in taking over 2 Army vehicles and some weaponry.

• Faced with sustained machine gun fire, several Mauritanian soldiers who survived the shooting, fled on foot for a safe haven in the nearby town of Azriouate, north of the capital Nouakchott.

• The terrorist group is said to belong to the GSPC-affiliated “Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb” which is also behind 2 previous deadly attacks on military targets in Mauritania.
