Thousands of Hectares Damaged due to Fires
Services of the civil protection and forests warned of environmental degradation following the wave fires that destroyed various forests and mountains, across different regions of the country, as officials described the situation as disastrous, after losing rare species of animals, and said that the fires still expand, and some of them did not quench, although the campaigns of preventing from firs that was previously organized by the same services.
An area of 850 hectares of vegetation in Tizi Ouzou (east of Algiers) was subject to combustion within five days recently, according to the services of forests, including 345 hectares of forest trees and 315 hectares of bushes and 90 hectares of jungle, and 100 hectares of orchards of fruit trees, olive and figs.
Flames destroyed within five days about 40.000 fruit trees, including 36.000 olive trees, after they destroyed 574 hectares.
APS quoted the governor of forests as saying; “We need to equip forests with means of air intervention like pontoons, to enter the rugged areas”, as the severe heat that swept the region recently, is one of the most important reasons for the several forest fires this year”.
In Jijel (eastern Algeria), a crisis cell was created due to the continuation of the intense heat, which swept large areas of forests causing many fires.
Secretary-General of Jijel cell, which includes mainly services of the forests, the civil protection, chairs the follow-up of the status, in the context of combating fires that caused a lot of damage in the region’s forests, according to what the city’s services said.
According to the services of forests’ protection, there has been 319 fires in the region that destroyed nearly 7000 hectares of forests, bushes and fruits trees until now, and 6.106 hectares of vegetation until 15 August, and uptil this time, the services of civil protection fail to control six fires in the same city.
