Traffic accidents kill 32 in a week

At least 32 people perished and 546 were injured in 461 street accidents in a week 27 December 2008 to 2 January 2009 in various regions of Algeria, civil protection authority says.

  • Death toll lowered by -3 and injuries rose by +229 compared to the same period of last year.
  • Previously, a report by the civil protection directorate said causes behind these street accidents are lost of control over cars for 108 cases, speed 90 and codes violations 41.
  • The Emergency Services, DGPC, reported that 603 Algerians killed and 8.650 injured in traffic accidents since the beginning of 2008, adding that 6 people die everyday.
  • In Algeria there is a clear need for a wide-ranging control program under a nationally organized body. Accident prevention also calls for social awareness; to fight this tragedy. This can only be done if safety conditions are gathered and laws are respected.
