Tunisia frees a former Algerian Guantanamo detainee

Tunisian authorities released a former Algerian detainee in Guantanamo, Mohammed Mahdi Ghazali, who was arrested last week in the coastal city of Sousse.

“Arabia. Net” quoted the father of Mohammad Mehdi Ghazali, as saying that the Tunisian authorities have released his son, and asked him to leave the Tunisian territory, and submit a new application if he wishes to get permanent residence in Tunisia, as now he is living in Sweden.

The father said that his son Mohammed, 34, has a Finnish mother and has dual citizenship, Swedish and Algerian, and have entered Tunisia with his Tunisian wife legally through an Italian port, and all the information covered in the press on entering illegally are false; “He was detained for two and half years in Guantanamo, and was declared not guilty in 2004 from a U.S. court, after being transferred to the prison in the end of 2001, from Pakistan, where he was there in order to study at the Islamic University, but suffered as a large number of Arabs in Pakistan from betrayal for the U.S authorities”.

“Swedish authorities played a positive role in the restoration of Mohammed from Guantanamo, after the Swedish intelligence confirmed that he is fully innocent, and has no relationship with any terrorist organizations. I am sad because the Algerian Embassy in Sweden refused to renew the passport of my son, and that means they prevented him from entering the country Algeria, despite seven of his brothers have Algerian passports”.

“Mohammed lived four years in Algeria before 1988, and traveled to an Islamic school in London, and before heading to Pakistan he traveled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, accompanied by a Swedish man who became a Muslim thanks to him, and the two brothers decided to stay in Saudi Arabia to learn the fundamentals of Islam at a Saudi university, but the Swedish university accepted the Swedish citizen and asked Mohammed to postpone registrations in this university”.
