UN commission calls for the lifting of the emergency state in Algeria
UN Security Council

Experts from a UN commission against torture have the day before yesterday, asked the Algerian authorities to lift the emergency state or, at least set a deadline to it, because according to them, this situation contradicts with th principles of a real democracy with rule of law.

During their meeting in Geneva, the UN experts declared that “the emergency state is no longer necessary and goes against the rule of law” and raised the issue to the Algerian authorities questioning them” whether they think about a date to lift up the emergency state”.

For their part, the Algerian authorities are set to respond to the UN experts tomorrow, but M. Farouk Kessentini yesterday declared to Echorouk that the UN experts’ questioning is irrelevant and that the emergency state in Algeria is still; on the agenda because the threat is still pondering.

As to the practice of torture in the Algerian prisons, M. Kessentini denied the fact saying” As a lawyer who spends most of the time in prisons,  have never met a case of torture, and never heard a complaint from a prisoner”
