US Safety Scan's “IGRIS” System To Monitor Algerian Ports, Airports

The American Group SAFETY SCAN LLC proposed the latest automatic scanning system IGRIS that is used by the Pentagon in its dealings to closely inspect goods and containers accurately, in parallel with the proposal to adopt a partnership that will enable Algeria to benefit from the system, and an estimated $ 200 million investment, of which about $ 90 million will be channeled into the public treasury.

The new technology IGRIS is used by the US Department of Defense “The Pentagon” and was introduced specifically during a meeting that was organized at the Hostelry High School, where the American company’s officials presented, in the presence of Amin Ghanem, Head of Management at the American Safety Scan LLC group, and Saida Neghza, chairman of the Algerian General Confederation of Institutions, and discussed the advantages of the proposed system to Algeria as one of the first countries in the region that will use it.

According to the provided explanations, the IGRIS system is used in ports and does not allow additional security for Algerian ports only, but can also be used by airports from the shipping side in particular, as the Neutron generators scan the target with more than one million neutrons per one second, which makes it possible to disclosure accurate details of all the contents of the containers and strictly with an accurate three-dimensional system.

The Central Control System also sends immediate notification to the concerned security services, customs, drug control bodies, ministerial departments and sovereign ministries, and may also be adopted at ports, airports and border points.

Amin Ghanem, Chairman of the American company «Safety Scan LLC», said that the system ensures the speed of processing, in just four seconds it can scan the container and know the three-dimensional verification of its contents and the detection of drugs or explosives or other products, and determine the details of the content.

A representative of the General Federation of Algerian Enterprises reported that an investment of more than $ 200 million was allocated for the acquisition of equipment and the support of the public treasury with revenues of up to $ 90 million. Therefore, the project would not pose any direct burden on the state treasury, but would have advantages for the benefit of Algeria, like ending the problem of slow handling of containers and waiting for ships at sea, which costs Algeria from $1 billion to 1.5 billion dollars a year, which is money in hard currency that Algeria can direct to exploit it in other development projects.

Officials of the American company asserted that Algeria is one of the first countries to be provided this technology through a partnership without elements of risk, especially as the Algerian government was fighting for a long time to reduce the phenomenon of smuggling, whether related to the smuggling of goods or capital, especially hard currency, which is usually used in the smuggling operations by importers in what is known as the “containers’ game”, and the smuggling of fireworks that represents a challenge for customs every year as well.

Representative of the American company confirmed that the system “IGRIS” ensures accurate detection of explosives, drugs and components of improvised explosive devices and homemade bombs and can be customized to the automatic notification.
