Veiled women not skilled enough to appear on the screen: Algeria TV manger says
Algeria's state-owned television general manager, Hamraoui Habib Chawki

Taking the floor before students, the state run television general manager, Hamraoui Habib Chawki replied to one of the questions saying that he was no against the idea of wearing the veil in the screen, mentioning that the criteria of selection are based on competence not on appearance, because after all Algeria is a Muslim country.

Not very convinced by the answer, the question has been asked again to the general manager, who was forced to give more substance to his previous answer saying that if he wouldn’t hesitate to give a chance to any of his employees to appear on the screen with a veil providing that this one proves its competency.

Chawki’s answer has been received with amazement by most of the students who attended the forum on communication, wondering how come an institution that employs some 3300 people doesn’t have a skilled enough veiled presenter as it is the case in major Arab TV channels.
