Violent street protests still jolt some parts of Bejaia province
Violent street protests against food price rises and unemployment continued on Sunday in some parts of the eastern province of Bejaia with clashes between angry youths and anti-riot police causing several injured and untold material damage.
- Numerous public buildings including the local town-hall, Banks and Sonelgaz offices and many shops and businesses were attacked and ransacked by the rioters who went on the rampage.
- The violent street protests spread like wildfire to several localities of the province including Adkar, Berchacha, Akbou, Sidi Aich, Tichi and Amizour where rioters clashed with security forces.
- The wisemen among the local population appealed for reason and calm in order to ward off a resurgence in the coming days of violent incidents while a general strike was observed yesterday in numerous municipalities of Bejaia in protest against the recent surge in food prices.
- Schools, shops and businesses remained closed on Sunday as a sign of popular protest.
