Washington: Algeria lacks a Special Legislation to Freeze Terrorists' Funds

U.S. Department of State warned, in a new report on terrorism, of the danger of “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb,” particularly in the tribal areas and the Sahel region, asserting that the terrorist organization remains a serious threat to the region’s security, especially in mountain areas eastern Algiers, in‬ southern localities of the country and the border countries ‭with the South of ‭ Algeria. ‬

The U.S Department of State added; “Algeria did not have a special legislation to freeze terrorists’ funds and considers that its ratification of international agreements on the financing of terrorism gives it the right to do so,” referring to the government’s review of the law on combating money laundering and terrorist financing for 2005 , “to include the necessary adjustments and adaptation with the recommendations of the session of the working group in charge of finance”.

“Algeria has examined deficiencies in the financial intelligence unit, and is works on the International Report of 2011 to improve its analytical capacities and special resources of its body.”

The report on terrorism that was presented by the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the U.S. Department of State, Daniel Benjamin, as reported by APS, said that al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, “remains a serious threat to the security, especially in the mountainous areas of eastern Algeria, and in the wide desert areas of the south, that are close to the obrder countries Southern Algeria “, despite the efforts of security forces in the fight against terrorism, referring to the terrorist organization which continues the implementation of suicide bombings and attacks using improvised explosive devices that are remotely controlled, and ambushes in rural areas outside the capital.

The report also said; “Algerian security forces have cut off ” Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb “in the north of the country and was able to reduce the number of successful terrorist attacks.
