Women Africa Nations Cup: Banyana Banyana will meet Super Falcons

The 2008 Women's African Football Championship is of 15 to 29 November 2008 in Equatorial Guinea. The central African country is the first time to host the tournament. Eight national teams come first in group matches and then the co-system against each other.

• A total of 22 national teams entered qualification. The qualification was in two rounds, with each match taking place over 2 legs. In the first round, the 16 lowest-ranked nations were drawn in pairs. The eight winners joined six other national teams in the 2nd round, where the seven winners together with the hosts qualified for the finals.
• “Banyana Banyana women” will meet Nigerian women’s team for the Fifth African Women Nations cup Semi Finals next November 29 in Equatorial Guinea.
• South Africa women are on top Group B with six points and Nigerians second.
• Tunisia will not participate in the final match after its women’s team lost Saturday against Ghana 3-2.
• Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon were qualified for the “Golden Square” from Group A.
• The CAF Women’s Championship is a biennial competition in women’s football for national teams which belong to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Seven tournaments have been held, with the current champions being Nigeria. The Super Falcons have won all seven tournaments to date.
• In 2000, hosts South Africa met three-time champions Nigeria in the final game of the tournament. After Nigeria finished the first half ahead 1-0, Nigeria’s Stella Mbachu scored a goal in the 72nd minute that the home crowd felt was offside. Supporters began hurling bottles and other debris at officials and Nigerian players.
• The match was abandoned after three attempts at restarts were all interrupted by further disturbances. Riot police began fighting battles with bottle-throwing supporters about 40 minutes after the goal had been allowed, throwing tear gas into the crowd to break up the disturbance. The game and the tournament were awarded to Nigeria.
• The Algeria women’s national football team is currently ranked 69th in the world in the FIFA Women’s rankings. The team’s highest ranking was 67th, in December 2007. It won the first Arab Women’s Cup in 2006 defeating hosts Egypt 4-2 in the final and was qualified twice to the CAF Women’s Championship in 2004 and 2006.
