‭ ‬ Drivers to choose between cars' technical control and prison

‬Over 3.5 million Algerian drivers will be obliged to bring their vehicles to the technical control agencies uring 2013, on January 7.

This procedure will be applied according to the cars’ numbering date which is marked on their own numbering cards, as penalties of up to prison and fines will be applied on all offenders.

In this context, an expert in technical surveillance and former general manager of a company of cars’ technical control, Ali Touahri, told Echorouk on Saturday that 3.5 million drivers of the light and heavy weighted vehicles, will be obliged to bring them to agencies of technical control this year, stressing that more than two million (2) vehicles pose a threat to the lives of their owners.

The spokesman added that 30% of the cars of the National Automotive barn cause traffic accidents, as the average age of light cars is 10 years, while the heavy vehicles’ average age is 14 years.

“These vehicles are a threat to traffic safety, as we recorded more than 20% of the national barn of cars, which is 2.5 million vehicles, including trucks and cars, while subject to technical control, lack of brake, and have old rubber wheels, and lack equipment and stop lights”.

“More than 600.000 drivers refuse to bring their vehicles to technical control. Which is equivalent to 80% of the total cars that are circulating everyday in the southern states”.

“There is a need to renew the national barn and reconsider the appropriations that were granted for the establishment of private companies of technical control, as Algeria counts more than 750 technical control lines, which is a very large number, compared to the national needs”.

The Ministry of Transport called upon owners of private cars that are numbered with year 2011 to bring their cars to technical control starting from January,7, 2013.

For their part, services of the gendarmerie and police will impose from the current January 7, censorship on the date and duration of validity of the documents of cars’ technical control.
