10 dead and 120 injured in floods due to torrential rains in several provinces of Algeria
The heavy rains which have poured down on several provinces of Algeria over the past two days have provoked extensive damage to numerous houses and caused the death of at least 10 people and injured 120 others on the country's roads due to severe floodings .
- According to a press release issued by the National Gendarmerie, most of the fatalities were the result of road accidents which happened because of slippery and swamped roads after heavy rainfalls.
- The torrential rains which poured down over the past two days on the central and eastern regions of the country notably Algiers, Setif, Mila, Batna, Boumerdes, Corso, Tipaza and Bouira provoked heavy damage to scores of houses because of swollen waters which swiftly turned into heavy floodings.
- Numerous roads in several provinces were cut to traffic for several hours because of the fall of trees or rocks on account of these bad weather conditions.
- The head of the communication cell at the civil protection force told “Echorouk” that the civil protection squads had to intervene on numerous occasions over the past 48 hours for rescue missions in various parts of the country.
- Many marooned citizens were rescued from the surging floods, he said.
- According to a special meteorological forecast report, this spell of bad weather is expected to last until next Thursday on the central and eastern regions of the country.
