1,139 payloads seized at Algeria’s port in 2007

Algeria’s governmental commission on negotiations for World Trade Organisation adhesion will meet in the next few days to decide in new offers the country has received since the 10’th round, according to Algerian Trade Ministry Hachemi Djaaboub.

The minister said Algeria is at ease now as it did not receive more than 12 questions from the United States of America compared to 140 questions it received last year.

Speaking at the Nation Council, Hachemi Djaaboub said his ministry is waiting for the governmental commission meeting and Algeria is ready for the 11th round due to be organised in June or July.

In 2007, some140, 000 payloads at Algerian ports were under surveillance. A total of 1,139 payloads were seized as they were not in conformity with the Algerian law and hygiene.

He added that surveillance and fraud repression as well as veterinary and customs keep watch on all imported commodities.

“Algeria is now importing the half of its consumption in wheat. It imports 1.5 million tons of cereals, coffee and sugar per year.”

According to the minister, the country’s milk production does not exceed two-third while it imports about 100,000 tons of milk powder to produce one billion and 200 million litres of pasteurised milk. “That raised Algeria’s food bill to $5 billion last year.”
