25 Pupils tried to Suicide in Schools Eastern Algiers

Participants in the meeting on the phenomenon of kids and adolescent suicide in schools, organized on Tuesday in Tizi Ouzou (east of Algiers) agreed on the need to intensify the campaigns of awareness through involving specialists in educational institutions, in order to help pupils who to resort to suicide, especially as the phenomenon began spreading in the schools.

Algerian schools counted during the current school year three cases of suicide, one in Aghrib, a second in Irjan and third in Tizi Rashed (Tizi Ouzou), along with 25 failed attempts, including the case of a pupil at the age of 13 years who studied in Makouda middle school, and who‭ tried to suicide three times, then he‭ ‬was transfered to the hospital of Oued Issa, where‭ he was put under ‭intensive care, because he suffered a psychological disease‭.

During the meeting, participants including, the Directorates of Education, Health, Religious Affairs, and many psychiatrists and others, Dr “Madyou” from the Directorate of Health in Tizi Ouzou, agree on the establishment of a network specialized in the treatment of the phenomenon of suicide, to provide help for the kids in all phases of school.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Directorate of Education, has called for the need to develop positions for the recruitment of psychologists, at the level of all educational institutions, in order to ensure the psychological and continuous monitoring of pupils, and requested the need to install cells to listen to kids on the level of all educational institutions, through intensifying ‬campaigns of awareness‬ among pupils.
