The Algerian Federation of Diabetics warned people against buying « light » products because most of them are fake and not controlled by the Algerian trade ministry. Some of them may cause cancer, a new study finds.

Many diabetics in Algeria follow a new diet in the fasting month of Ramadan based on “light” food including sodas, juice and cakes. Because of that, the Algerian Federation of Diabetics organized a national campaign to warn patients and encourage them to not change their diets and avoid “light” products.

The federation’s president Nourredine Bousseta said diabetics who use insulin must not fast to avoid health troubles because of food and medicines time change.

“Some manufacturers use fake raw materials in their light products as the original materials which are very expensive. They want to gain money in an easy way,” Bousseta told Echorouk on the phone.

The federation sounded the alarm about the increasing number of diabetics in Algeria. They are 3 million and 500,000. Of them, 25 percent are young people and most of them are women.
