39 million Algerians use the subway and Tramway

More than 39 million passengers have useed Algiers metro and tramway, since they were operational in November 2011 and May 2012 respectively. According to the General Manager of Algiers Metro, Omar Hadbi, the statistics that were prepared by his services show that up to the end of June, the number of Algiers Metro users reached 21 million passengers, while the total number of users of the tramway line reached 18 million.

The number of passengers of Oran tramway line, Western Algeria, which was inaugurated last May 2012, reached 5, 1 million, I.e. 80,000 passengers per day, while the new “tramway” line of Constantine, Eastern Algeria, reached an unprecedented number of users, as it coincided with the month of Ramadan and summer season.

“Positive reflection of transport projects that achieve business positions, reached 1557 direct jobs, especially in Algiers metro and tramway and Constantine tramway.

General Manager acknowledged that these figures are “below expectations for metro cards and various Tramway services” stressing the need to restructure the field of transport in the capital.

Focusing on the restructuring of complementarily, and not competition between the various modes of public urban transport at the level of the same lines, as is the case now for the 1st Mai Square elements which are used buses and the metro.
