65 percent of Algerians move on foot, says study

A total of 65 percent of people in Algeria move on foot while 58 percent use bus and 35 percent move by car, a study finds.

  • “People prefer moving on foot due to anarchy in transport sector in Algeria and the big disparity in the distribution of transport means,” said a study conducted by the Algerian Transport Ministry.
  • Transport sector in Algeria counts 11,364 private and 17 public operators, according to the same study.
  • The study says 2,225 of vehicles used in transportation in Algeria are over 19 years old while 3,324 vehicles are less than 5 years.
  •
  • Algiers Metro is one of Algeria’s big projects in the transport sector. It is due to be ready by the end of 2009 targeting the capital’s overloaded major roads.
  • In 2006, Algeria’s Entreprise du Métro d’Alger (EMA) awarded a contract to manage construction of the priority section of the Eastern line of the Algiers tramway to a consortium comprising SYSTRA and RATP-Développement.
  • The line runs eastwards from the Carrefour du Ruisseau situated to the east of Algiers city centre. It will serve the new Bananiers district, Houari Boumedienne University, Bordj el Kiffan centre and will terminate at Dergana, close to Algiers airport. The priority section, to which the contract relates, runs as far as Bordj el Kiffan.
