8000 Police Officers Subject of Assaults by Citizens
As many as 8 000 police officers have been subject to assaults by ctizens while doing their duty, in 2011, a report released by the General Homeland Security Department (DGSN) reveals.
The DGSN report shows that 3000 police officers have been injured during the recent protests sparking in countrywide.
Some 148 police officers are suffering serious injuries, and still in hospital in critical situation, so far.
The report indicates that since the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan, there have been 250 cases related to the humiliation and offence of police officers while doing their duty. The majority of the cases occurred when the police officers chase out street hawkers. The police officers encounter aggressive reactions, as the street hawkers, generally, resort to white arms and stone throwing, causing, thus, serious injuries and, sometimes, permanent handicap to the officers .
The latest case occurred in Eucalyptus neighbourhood, in the south east outskirts of Algiers, as a group of persistent offenders have managed freeing a criminal who was arrested by police. Security services have opened an investigation to identify the offenders in question.
