886 Algerians jailed in Italy: ANTIGONE
A total of 886 Algerian prisoners are jailed in Italy. The number of Italian prisons is estimated at 208, said official at an Italian non-governmental organization.
- ANTIGONE’s latest report shows that the number of Algerian prisoners went down as it reached 900 by the end of 2010 compared to 1,056 in 2009. A total of 14 Algerians including two women served their sentence.
- The report says it gave figures about Algerian prisoners involved in various cases and were sentenced by the Italian justice. Illegal immigrants held in detention secret centres are not mentioned in the report as they were not condemned by justice.
- The Algerian prisoners represent 3.6 percent of foreign prisoners in Italy estimated at about 25,000 people. The number of Moroccan prisoners is estimated at 5,247 and Tunisians at 3,124.
- The Algerians are accused of terror acts, illegal weapons trade, drug smuggling, theft and violence against family’s members.
