The death of historic legend and Algeria’s last revolution and history maker Hocine Ait Ahmed has been the major event since Wednesday in Tizi Ouzou.

Residents in Ait Ahmed’s native town Ain El Hammam showed deep grief over his death as he passed away without visiting his homeland.

“We were waiting for his visit. Ain El Hammam was keen on receiving him alive. Yet, we will receive his body. He preferred to be buried in his ancestors’ land although he had chosen to live abroad,” a resident said.

Ain El Hammam has been mourning since the announcement of his death on Wednesday at his house in Geneva. His family in his native village started receiving people who wanted to express condolences.

The headoffice of his party FFS was also opened to receive residents.

Tears over Ait Ahmed’s death

Ait Ahmed’s former companion described him as a committed revolutionary and a humble leader with great ideas and positions.

“During the 1963 coup, he ordered us not to open fire on soldiers or gendarmes, saying that we were not in a war. He said our issue is political and we would not resolve it by bloodshed,” he told Echorouk.

According to Ait Ahmed’s cousin, the national leader showed patriotism since his childhood. He was jailed by French occupiers as he was just a young schoolboy. He refused to hail his headmaster.

Ait Ahmed had always been attached to opposition and sought Algeria’s interest above everything.
