Algeria: RND Party In The Throes Of Internecine Feud
The sixth session in Algiers of the National Council of the RND Party has been marred by violent scuffles between supporters and opponents of RND Secretary general Ahmed Ouyahia
- Security forces were called in to restore law and order and separate the scurrilous protagonists.
- At the end of the council’s opening session, Mrs Nouria Hafsi, who is a member of the national council and an opponent of Ahmed Ouyahia, started handing out leaflets calling for “the salvaging of the RND Party” to journalists present in the vicinity of the conference hall where the meeting was taking place.
- Suddendly, a group of unknown assailants stormed the premises and roughed up Mrs Nouria Hafsi and then scuffles ensued involving rival party militants forcing the security forces to intervene.
- Numerous dissidents have meanwhile, called for the holding of an extraordinary party congress meeting at the earliest possible time to elect a new RND leadership with a view to preparing for the next local elections.
