Britain’s Queen Elizabeth Addresses Parliament

Queen Elizabeth has re-affirmed her commitment to the British people in a speech to parliament marking her 60th year on the throne.

In her speech at Westminster Hall Tuesday, the queen said Britons are reminded of “their past, the continuity of their national story and the virtues of resilience, ingenuity and tolerance, which created it.” “I have been privileged to witness some of that history and, with the support of my family, rededicate myself to the service of our great country, and its people, now and in the years to come.” The queen remarked that she is just the second English monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary), the first being Queen Victoria. The 85-year-old monarch also took a moment to praise her husband, Prince Philip, for his “constant strength.” Hundreds of lawmakers, dignitaries and former prime ministers gathered for the speech and to pay tribute to the queen. British lawmakers unveiled a stained glass window, which they presented to her as a gift marking the occasion.
