500 Algerians Threatened By Shi’ite Rebels’ Assault in Yemen

About 500 Algerian nationals living in the troubled city of Saada, northern Yemen, have urged authorities to come for their help, following the armed attack committed by Shi'ite rebels targeting a Sunni Islamist school and other sites, killing at least 21 people and wounding about 50 others.

A provincial security official and local Sunnis told foreign news agencies that the Shi’ite Zaidi rebels known as Houthis shelled Sunni targets in the town of Damaj late Saturday and Sunday. They say the targets included a school run by the Sunni Islamist Salafi sect.

Many Algerians have been living in Saada, as they applied in the Islamic school to study there, before deciding to rent houses near the school, where they have been staying for years with their wives and sons.

A well informed source told Echorouk reporter that Algerian national in Saada fear to leave their houses, due to the omnipresence of pro Shi’ite rebel snipers, who were ordered to shot the Islamic school students.

The source added that the besieged Algerians could not contact the Consulate of Algeria due to the disturbance in telephone lines and power supply.

An Algerian in Saada was forced to evacuate furtively his pregnant wife to hospital, while another pregnant woman brought a dead baby due to the lack of medical treatments, the source added.

Yet, Algeria Foreign Ministry said it is closely following up the issue, calling on its nationals to contact diplomatic representations in Yemen.

The family members of Algerian nationals living in war-troubled zones abroad are called also to provide addresses and phone numbers of their relatives, as to contact them, and ultimately evacuate them.

The Shi’ite Zaidi sect dominates the Saada region and sees the Salafis as a threat. Militants from both sides have fought each other in recent weeks, prompting local tribesmen to try to secure a truce.

Houthi rebels led an uprising against the Yemeni government in the country’s north for years before both sides agreed to a truce last year.
