Abdelkader Messahel: The international community pledges assistance to Sahel countries

The Delegate Minister for African and Maghreban Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel has declared that the Algerian move to close the borders with Libya was an exceptional measure and came following the absence of security authorities from the Libyan side due to the developing in the neighboring country.

  •

  • Taking the floor before journalists at the Foreign Ministry’s premises, the minister has asserted that the Algerian authorities have stiffened security measures along the borders with the North African country, in a bid to avert the smuggling of huge quantities of arms stolen from the Libyan munitions stores and the prevent the migration of thousands of refugees who fled persecution at home.

  •

  • M Messahel put it clear that the Algerian authorities are looking ahead for the establishment of a new Libyan state based on sound institutions as prerequisite for the recognition of the National Transitional Council, though Algeria is committed to not mix in the other countries’ domestic affairs.

  •

  • Talking last Friday in “ Libya’s friends” forum hosted by the French capital Paris, the Algerian FM Mourad Medelci has indicated that the event was an opportunity for Algeria to reaffirm its standpoint vis –à- vis the Libyan crisis, which currently shared by many international actors.

  •

  • M Medelci has asserted few hours before the opening of the forum last Thursday in Paris that the Algerian political stand concerning the Libyan crisis doesn’t suffer any ambiguity and that neutrality doesn’t mean support to Queddafi’s regime.

  •

  • However, His French opposite number Alain Juppé had asserted that the Algerian position was “ ambiguous” and expressed his disappointment for the reluctance showed by those authorities to recognize the Libyan NTC.

  •

  • Talking yesterday in a press conference ,the Delegate Minister for African and Maghreban Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel has noted that the “exceptional” participation in the World Forum on Counterterrorism translates the genuine will to assist countries like Algeria, Mali, Niger and Mauritania in their counterterrorism fight.
