Politicians: parliamentary system is the best for Algeria

Politicians: parliamentary system is the best for Algeria
The National Front’s leader Moussa Touati

Algeria’s presidential system should be replaced by parliamentary system in order to concretise freedoms and valorise democracy, according to Algerian politicians.

  • The National Front’s leader Moussa Touati believes that the best political system for Algeria in the parliamentary system. “It is the only system n which people can rule themselves by themselves.”
  •
  • He suggests holding a “free and transparent referendum” to figure out the most appropriate political system. “The current presidential system is an obstacle to the political system reform,” he added.
  •
  • Al Nahda movement’s leader Fateh Rabai agrees with Touati on the necessity of replacing the presidential political system in Algeria by the parliamentary system. “History proved that power in one person’s hand had often led to totalitarian systems,” he said.
  •
  • “In the parliamentary system, the president of the king’s role is no more than giving advice to the State’s powers. He has to choose a prime minister out of the parliamentary group which won elections,” he added.
  •
  • Al Islah movement’s leader Djamel Ben Abdelsselam is for a parliamentary system in Algeria. “It is necessary to limit President’s office to two terms. Imbalance in the system is due to prerogatives interference and executive system dominance on legislators.”
  •
  • Leader of unaccredited Liberty and Justice party Mohamed Said believes that the parliamentary political system is the only solution to avoid falling into oppression trouble in Arab countries. “In 2009 electoral campaign, I asked for adopting the parliamentary system. I explained the presidential system concretises power in one person’s hand. That means if that person collapse, the system declines at the same time,” he said.
  •
  • On the other hand, member of the FLN’s political office Abdelhamid Si Afif believes that it is not necessary to replace the current system. “The current system has many positive aspects. Institutions perform their role freely. I believe that there is a need to make some changes to the system and separate between powers.”
  •
  • The MSP movement believes that the problem in Algeria is not in the political system nature. “We are neither against nor for any system. It is a question of seriousness and conviction in concretising separation between powers and law respect,” said the party’s spokesman Mohamed Djomoaa.
