The studies for the construction of a new international airport in Algiers, of a capacity of 10 million passengers per year, will be launched in January 2012, CEO of the Management Entreprise of Algiers Airport Services and Infrastructures (SGSIA), Tahar Allache announced Saturday.

The local APS news agency has quoted Mr Allache as saying that “the announcement of the tender for the selection of engineering  offices to be in charge of developing technical studies of this future infrastructure will be launched as by January 2012,” adding that “this infrastructure will increase the capacity of the incumbent International Airport of Houari Boumedien.”

He further specified that this new terminal/West, is estimated at 33 billion Algerian DZD (about 300 million US dollars) and yet to be delivered as by 2018.

It includes a passenger terminal, a parking for aircrafts and another for cars with a 6,000 units’ capacity, the official said.

This infrastructure will be constructed on a surface of 65 hectares located between the existing international terminal and the new VIP lounge of the airport.

Mr. Allache further explained that this project aims at avoiding saturation at the current Algiers Airport.

The SGSIA has considered issues related to the strong growth in global demand on air transport, and yet decided to build a “hub” airport dedicated to Air Algerie, and also to allow the gradual implementation of the “Open Sky” policy between countries.

The development of alliances between airlines, the emergence in the future of charter companies in Algeria and the exploitation of a new generation of large aircraft, are also among the factors considered by the designers of the project.

The 12 million passengers / year airport consists of a terminal for international flights, on the other for domestic flights, and a third for charter flights.

The current international terminal, which was inaugurated in May 2006, has a capacity of 6 million passengers / year.
