Morocco’s King Mohamed the Sixth informed Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika that his country considers the Maghrebin Union as an indisputable strategic choice and will spare no effort to achieve integration between its five members.

“Our commemoration of this glorious event renews our Maghrebin people’s hopes to reach their legitimate aspirations. This could enable us to achieve the Marrakech Treaty’s goals and open the perspectives of a promising future,” Mohamed the Sixth said in a letter to President Bouteflika on the 27th anniversary of the creation of the Maghrebin Union.

This came following a letter previously sent by Bouteflika to Morocco’s King on the same occasion. “I am convinced that we have to continue building the Maghrebin Union as our region is exposed to unprecedented threats and challenges. They can not be faced with an individual action. We have to do that collectively on the basis of a common and coordinated strategy,” it said.

The Maghrebin Union experiences a “frozen” phase as well as bilateral relations between Algeria and Morocco. Rabat conducts unprecendented hostile policy towards Algiers. Its King describe Algeria as an “enemy and adversary.” His foreign minister uses more hostile words when he speaks about Algiers. Moroccan authorities do not stop their politicians including the Independence Party’s leader who alleged that Algeria occupies Moroccan cities such as Bechar and Tindouf.
