Head of the National Observatory Against Islamophobia in France, Abdallah Zekri, expressed to “Le courier de l’Atlas” newspaper, concerns over the increasing acts of racism and Islamophobia against the Muslim Community in France since the events of “Charlie Hebdo”, as 147 assaults were recorded against Muslims during January, and more than 60 people were followed up by justice on charges of glorifying terrorism, even kids were arrested by French cops.
In his interview with French newspaper on Friday, Abdellah Zakari said; “Feelings of anxiety and fear among the Muslim community are growing in France, especially after the rise in the number of attacks against mosques and even people, and arrests against some of them because of “Charlie Hebdo”.
“These figures belong to the people who make complaints, but the reality is shocking, because there are people who do not report, and are frustrated by the authorities way of handling with their cases. Dominant discourse feeds hatred against Muslims.”
Regarding the follow up of kids in cases of terrorism, such as what happened to the child Ahmed,8, in Nice, he explained; ” That matter raised concerns after things developed and targeted even kids, even though they are not aware of the meaning of terrorism. What is happening in France, from contempt for Muslims reminds us of the Nazi period. We have the impression that if you are a Muslim in France, it has become a crime. Since the attacks, most of the French people think that Muslims are terrorists, even though they went out to the street against violence and condemn terrorism against journalists of “Charlie Hebdo”, despite the fact that they were irresponsible, and fueled the fire of sedition bu insulting the Prophet. There must be freedom of expression for all not for one party. I call upon the French government to combat violence and extremism against Muslims and the distinction between them and the terrorists.”
