African countries are seeking for permanent membership at the Security Council

African Union countries seek to participate by its Foreign Ministers and representatives of various regional and international bodies, at the Third Conference of Oran (western Algeria), to resolve the conflicts and terrorist groups, planning for the ambition to nail the permanent membership at the Security Council to obtain the right of veto, as stated by the Security and Peace Commissioner, Ismail Charki.

For the second day in a row, the works of the high-level Third African Conference for Peace and Security in Oran, continued in closed sessions that are marked by the presence of the diplomatic veteran, Lakhdar Brahimi, the former Foreign Minister and member of the Elders of Africa Group and the envoy of the Arab League and the United Nations to Syria before his resignation.

Brahimi offers, through his honorary presence, his experience in solving the continent’s problems and resolve the internal conflicts, with highlighting the leading role of Algeria in solving various issues, especially counterterrorism.

On the second day the bilateral talks began between the State, Foreign, and the International Cooperation Minister, Ramtane Lamamra, and participants at Oran conference, including the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and the African Union representative, and Angola Foreign Minister, who is a non-permanent member at the Security Council.

Lamamra said the voice of African countries should reach the international bodies and real cooperative relationship should be linked with the Security Council and the United Nations.

Peace and security commissioner, Ismail Charki, pointed to the quest to nail the permanent membership in the Security Council and the acquisition of the right of “veto”, which is only used by the major countries in the world, which enjoy permanent membership, with the knowledge that African countries possess three non-permanent seats only, which are Angola, Egypt and Senegal, starting from January.

He also revealed the intention to send a new military force in northern Mali to fight terrorist groups, refusing to confirm or deny the participation of Algeria, stating that the African Union is gradually going to achieve their ambitions, including the permanent membership of the Security Council.

The participants discussed, at the high-level meeting in Oran, the ways of eliminating the phenomenon which has regional and international dimensions, and resolve various outstanding developmental problems, pending to reach important recommendations on Tuesday, as this high-level meeting will be followed with another meeting of the African Defense Ministers in January.
