Alarming Failure Rate of Students at Algiers Universities

Different universities of Algiers the capital are enduring a state of alarm following the exaggerating failure rate, noting that 82% of students at the foreign languages faculty are yet to repeat the year, causing thus a blockage of studies.

In fact, the university’s administrations still reject to bring the required passing marks down to 8/20 rather than the usual 10/20, saying such a move would affect the reputation of the Algerian University internationally. 

For instance, the head office of the Economy Sciences Faculty has decided to sue in justice striking students over charges of hindering the start of studies. 

Meanwhile, student unions demand helping students who have 8/20 mark to pass, in order to overcome the current blockade situation that hinders the start of studies in most faculties.

However, Abdelmalek Rehmani, the head of the National Higher Education Teachers (CNES) said “the high failure rate in the university should be looked at, and examined to detect its main reasons”, adding “I’d say that an investigation on this phenomenon is a must.”
