Algeria : 51 terrorist chieftains, preaching leaders of Salafist group have close ties with Al-Qaeda, says US report
According to an assessment report issued by the US Randa think tank research group based in California, Ben Laden’s Al-Qaeda terror network has taken advantage of the schisms and fractures within several terror groups notably the GIA and the GSPC to spearhead more terrorist attacks in the name of Al Qaeda in Europe and North Africa.
A case in point is the declaration made to Algerian investigators by an influential member of the GSPC terror group namely Mohamed Megharba who said that Ben Laden had entrusted him with carrying out terrorist attacks on European soil well before the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
According to the US report, a host of GSPC members have a close relationship with the Al Qaeda leadership.
The Al-Qaeda leaders have been endeavouring, says the report, to broaden their base by covertly seeking, through their propaganda rhetoric, to muster more support in Muslim countries notably Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, Pakistan, Cashmere and elsewhere.
