Algeria’s Army chief of staff Major General Gaid Salah started Tuesday February 26, a tour of several military regions in the west of the country as part of an inspection visit mainly designed to give a fresh impetus to the Algerian troops’ long-running struggle against the heinous scourge of terrorism in the area.Major General Gaid Salah is scheduled to visit the Army’s regional headquarters in the western provinces of Sidi Bel Abbes and Oran where he will meet with senior military officers.
Reliable sources told Echorouk newspaper that the upcoming military command encounters would essentially focus on how best to carry through a newly-devised Army strategy aimed at stamping out terrorism activities in the western regions.
In this respect, Major General Gaid Salah is expected to issue a set of guidelines geared to ensuring a greater and more potent presence of Algerian troops in all parts of western provinces with a view to eradicating the remaining terrorist groupings who are believed to be still entrenched in the dense forests and mountainous regions.
The same sources also said that Major General Gaid Salah would also take the opportunity of his inspection visit to address, with the regional Army command, the vexed illegal immigration issue or “Harragas”, a phenomenon which is on a steady rise particularly in the western part of Algeria .
