Algeria experts warn against US body scanners
US airport body scanners may cause leukaemia, poor sexual performance, sterility, fetal malformation and paralysis among people with artificial pacemakers and artificial organs, Algerian experts say.
- Head of the Algerian Organisation for Health, Development and Research Mustapha Khayati said Tuesday the three-dimensional total body imaging scanner can turn blood cells into cancer ones.
- “People who travel a lot and scanned by the new device are the most vulnerable to cancer. Of them, there are: aircraft staff and import / export merchants,” said Khayati.
- “Pregnant women should not be scanned. Radiation may cause fetal malformation,” he added.
- For his part, the chairman of the Algerian doctors syndicate Dr. Bakat Barkani said the scanner is very dangerous and is not in conformity to medical standards.
- “Experts at the World Heatlth Organisation have warned the US over its decision to tighten up security measures in airports.”
- The US included Algeria in the list of countries to be subject to additional security measures in airports. Algerian foreign minister summoned the U.S. ambassador Monday to express to him the Algerian government’s strong protest over this measure.
