Algeria facing hurdles by rich nations over projected adhesion to the WTO

The Trade Ministry has revealed that the rich nations have set stringent criteria on the way to Algeria's planned accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) despite the backing for our country extended in Geneva, Switzerland, by the Arab and African groups and developing countries as a whole.

  • The Algerian delegation headed by Trade Minister, Mr Mustapha Benbada, took part in the WTO ministerial conference on December 15th to 17th in Geneva and held a series of talks with WTO officials as well as with delegates from the African and Arab groups and those from the Islamic Conference Organization with on focus the outlining of Algeria’s long-delayed membership bid and how best it could be given a fresh impetus by the parties concerned.

  • In November, Trade Minister Mustapha Benbada, described Algeria’s economic conditions as “excellent” comparing to the current global economic recession, saying that these bright prospects should speed up Algeria’s accession to the WTO.

  • Having submitted its membership application in 1987, Algeria has already participated in 10 rounds of WTO negotiations, the last of which dated back to 2008.
