Algeria foreign ministry questions Egyptian ambassador about offensive statement
The Algerian foreign ministry asked the Egyptian ambassador to Algiers Azzedine Fahmi to give clarifications about his statements to media as he said “Algeria is not Egypt and Egyptians are peaceful people and can not be induced to violence.”
The statement was reported by journalists who asked the ambassador about the possibility that Egypt would experience the same violence wave which took place in Algeria in the 1990’s.
Echorouk has learnt from official sources that the ambassador denied the reported statement, saying it is “baseless” and his remarks were interpreted in a wrong way by some journalists.
Fahmi washed hands of his reported statement on news websites. Yet, he did not issue an official release to deny it.
“Journalists must prove that statement if they have tapes,” he told the foreign ministry.
“It was about an answer to a journalist. I told him every country has its specificities and internal conditions. Scenarios can not be copied from a country to another,” he added.
Earlier, Algeria said it is concerned about bloody events which took place during last protests in Egypt.
“We are very concerned about bloody events which happened during last protests in Egypt,” said a spokesman for the ministry.
