Algeria/France: Scrapping of visa for diplomatic passport holders

Algerian President Abdellaziz Bouteflika has formally initialled the accord signed with France concerning the scrapping of a short-term visa for the nationals from the two countries holding diplomatic passports. The move followed last July’s state visit to Algeria by French President Nicholas Sarkozy during which a number of major bilateral agreements were inked, notably an accord related to the easing of the free movement of people between the two countries.

However, this accord does not concern the consular staff of the two countries, nor their close relatives who are bound to apply for a visa, like any other citizen, to be able to travel to either France or Algeria .

In a reaction, a leading parliamentary official Abdelhamid Si Affif expressed satisfaction at the move, hoping that the Algerian-French visa agreement would also be extended to include other citizens, notably business managers and economic operators as part of the declared political will to enhance the links of friendship and exchanges between the two countries.
