Algeria high school headmasters to go on strike against low pay raise
High school headmasters plan to go on three-day-strike starting from February 18th to protest against low pay increase, saying “enough is enough” to the administration and education ministry.
The headmasters called their protests “Dignity Strike.” They are expected to go to regional education authorities and protest at the national education ministry headquarters. They also said they would quit training sessions along with national education inspectors at high school administrations.
The protesters think of suing the ministry to recover their rights. They call on it to review their salary.
This anger comes as recent changes to their statute stipulate pay raise between 554 DZ and 2,880 DZ per month, which is seen by high school headmasters as “very low.”
The protesters say teachers in primary and high schools are ranked in the same position as headmasters.
“Now, I feel ashamed when I have to write down the salary of a teacher working at my high school. How can a teacher get a higher pay than his / her director?” a high school director told Echorouk.
