Algerian industry ministry reminded car dealers of adapting their situation to the new regulations if they want to continue importing cars.

“As part of the implementation of the new regulations determining conditions of exercising new car dealers’ activity, they should update their situation as soon as possible,” said the ministry in a release.

“This procedure is meant to enable them to pursue their importing activity. Deadline to submit applications for importing licences is February 3rd,” it added.

Commerce ministry fixed cars importing shares at 152,000 vehicles for the year 2016 to put an upper limit to imports which exceed national market needs.

The new regulations do not allow any operator to import more than 30 percent of total fixed shares. It does not concern lorries and trucks imported for private use.

This comes as Algeria’s cars importing bill exceeded $3 billion in 2015 compared to around $6 billion in 2014.

The number of imported cars was estimated at 265,523 in 2015 compared to 417,913 in 2014.
