Algeria journalists in sit-in for social rights
Algerian journalists Saturday staged a sit-in in Algiers to call on the government to prepare their status, to reactivate the Information Law 1990 and to create a high council for information.
- Tens of journalists gathered in La Maison de la Presse to ask the government to open an official debate about the reality of the press profession.
- They are expected to hold a meeting on Tuesday to talk about housing and pay raise issues. They decided to go on strike on May 3rd.
- Their slogan was “we listened to you a lot. Now, we are speaking. So, listen to us. They also said “we wrote about all the social categories. It’s time to rehabilitate us.”
- A communiqué was distributed on journalists. “This initiative is free and it results from the bitter social reality of Algerian journalists,” it said.
- “Algerian journalists are unanimous in saying that they are living in a very bad social situation because of problem accumulation. It is the opportune time for that. All the functional sectors in society are seeking to reach their objectives and get social rights,” it added.
