Algeria lost its membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the last elections that were held in mid-November after the members of the Executive Council elected 31 countries out of the 58 participating countries while the membership of 11 countries was renewed and 20 new countries were elected.

The electoral process, which took place in mid-November, witnessed great competition among five Arab countries to renew membership in UNESCO, namely Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Qatar, where Saudi Arabia won 113 votes, while the United Arab Emirates 107 votes.

Tunisia won 103 votes, but the surprise is the loss of Algeria’s membership in the organization after many years of representation, especially under the former Minister of National Education, Nouria Benghabrit, who has always asserted on many occasions the need to involve experts in general and the educated class in the achievement of educational goals that were set by the UNESCO by contributing to the activities of the National Commission in charge of the mission and participating strongly in the various national events that are associated with the field of competence of the Organization, to achieve long-term goals.
