Algeria: “Mauritanian national gets 5-year prison sentence on charges of terrorism”

A Mauritanian national, Afrokada Mohamed, aged 36 belonging to the so-called “”Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb” (AQIM) was sentenced on Wednesday by the Algiers criminal court to 5 years in prison for terrorist activities and complicity in the attempted abduction of foreign tourists in 2010.

 

  • A Mauritanian national, Afrokada Mohamed, aged 36 belonging to the so-called “”Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb” (AQIM) was sentenced on Wednesday by the Algiers criminal court to 5 years in prison for terrorist activities and complicity in the attempted abduction of foreign tourists in 2010.

 

  • According to the General Prosecutor, Afrokada and four of his accomplices had planned to kidnap foreign tourists south of Tamanrasset in southern Algeria before handing them over to terrorist groups active in the region.

 

  • The culprits, now behind bars, planned to exchange their captives for 4.500.000 dinars or 45.000 euros but were rounded up by security forces before carrying out their misdeed.
