Algeria ready to meet domestic, international energy demands, Youcef Yousfi says

Algiers- Algeria will seize every opportunity in the mining field to “meet the domestic market as well as its commitments to customers on the international market,” Minister of Energy and Mines Youcef Yousfi says.

“We must exploit all opportunities offered by our large national mining in order to meet our future energy needs, whether to meet the domestic demand of the national market or to meet our business commitments abroad”, Youcef Yousfi told the APS marking the 41^st anniversary of the nationalization of hydrocarbons.

 Besides the focus on renewable energies, Yousfi confirmed the need to exploit fossil fuels that are not yet developed or not yet explored, particularly in the northern regions of the country and in its offshore zones.

“In addition to renewable energies which will occupy an increasingly important part of the country’s energy mix, fossil fuels are added as undeveloped or unexplored, including unconventional resources. Apart from some exploratory work and research carried out in northern Algeria, the region remains under-explored, while offshore zone is practically not explored at all”, he added.

 “Works undertaken by Sonatrach and studies by Alnaft were precisely designed to evaluate the potential of the national mining, in partnership with actors who have the “necessary expertise”, he explained.

 Youcef Yousefi asserted that “several actions and initiatives have been undertaken to assess the potential of the national mining.

 “Today, we are, in partnership with actors who have the necessary expertise in the phase of deepening the evaluation of studies of highly prospective unconventional hydrocarbons”, he added.
