Algeria teachers go on strike
Primary, junior and high school teachers in Algeria went on strike Sunday following the call of six unions after submitting a set of requests to the national education ministry.

Pupils in the municipality of Sidi Mhamed in Algiers left their schools as guards refused to open the doors at around 8 am. Others had been standing up next to their schools until 10 am hoping the teachers would stop the strike.

Aissat Idir junior school and Idrissi high school in Algiers received pupils who have contractual teachers as the law did not allow them to go on strike.

A number of pupils told Echorouk they are thinking of not going to school until the end of the strike. “We will not go to school for one subject or two.”

Pupils at Ib Elhaithem high school were unsatisfied about the strike, saying it is legitimate to improve teachers’ social conditions. “But it will affect our studies especially that exams are coming soon.”

A number of parents did not go to work as they had to wait for their children who stayed in their schools until noon.
