Algeria to allocate monthly allowance to families in charge of forsaken elderly people

The government council has been examining a draft law pertaining to the protection of abandoned elderly people submitted by the National Solidarity Minister Djamel Ould Abbas in expectation of its adoption and its full implementation at the earliest possible time.

The projected law on the matter is designed to better protect and safeguard those old people relinquished in old peoples’ homes by their children callously and with no pangs of conscience.

Under the new legislation, the latter will be subjected to legal proceeding for ill-treatment of their old parents coupled with heavy fines if they ever decide to forsake their old parents in elderly peoples’ homes across the national territory.

In an incentive measure, the government has decided to give a monthly allowance to families willing to take in charge, in their own homes, forsaken elderly people to immerse them in a substitute family atmosphere.

The government is thus determined to take in charge this poignant issue in charge seriously with the swift adoption of a string of deterrent measures in a bid to drastically curb this distressing social phenomenon.
