Algeria to Support the Construction of the Last Trans Saharan Highway Section in Niger

Minister of Public Works, Amar Ghoul, said Tuesday that Algeria has decided to support the accomplishment of the Trans-Saharan highway section on the Niger territory,

 

In this regard, an Algeria-Niger Technical Committee for Public Works has been installed Tuesday in Algiers with the main objective of promoting bilateral cooperation and following up the last 223 km section of the Trans-Saharan Road, located in Niger, linking Samka and Arlit localities. 

After meeting Niger Minister of Equipment, Kalla Ankorao, the local APS news agency has quoted Mr Goul as saying that “the committee aims at boosting the public works convention sealed between Algeria and Niger, and also to permit to Algeria to support Niger with necessary means in order to accomplish the agreed on works.”

However, the news agency reported that the Niger Minister of Equipment indicated that his country has been allotted 100 million US dollars, as to accomplish the project, saying that a group of banks will be in charge of financing it. 

Mr Ankorao mentioned that 10 billion USD have already been allotted by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), adding that OPEC Fund for International Development and the Islamic Bank for Development have pledged to finance the project too. 

He further added that the works will start before the end of next year, adding that the tender of this project will be announced on next April. 

The Niger minister further added that the section linking Algiers to Lagos estimated at 1.95 billion USD.
