Algeria : trial of former GSPC leader Hassan Hattab put in limbo
Hassan Hattab, former leader of GSPC

The planned trial of the founder and former leader of the GSPC terrorist group Hassan Hattab, who gave up himself up late last year to the Algerian security forces, has been put off till further notice by the Boumerdes criminal court on grounds of a further probe into this case.Reliable sources told Echorouk newspaper that the court’s postponement decision was geared to streamlining the legal procedure underway with the goals of the new strategy worked out by the security services in the relentless struggle against the scourge of terrorism.

The same sources also indicated that the legal files of other GSPC leaders, who are also in custody, namely Abderrazak Al Para and Belmokhtar were also held in abeyance, for the time being, for similar reasons.

It is believed that the three defendants could, in certain circumstances, benefit from the provisions of the national charter of peace and reconciliation, but this contingency is not the order of the day for the moment.

It should noted that Hassan Hattab has recently sent a letter to President Abdellaziz Bouteflika in which he firmly condemned the series of terrorist bombings carried out in Algiers and elsewhere in the country and expressed his resolve to work steadily for peace and national reconciliation.

He called, in this connection, on his former GSPC henchmen to forsake “senseless violence” and to lay down their arms and give themselves up, in the hope of benefiting from the clemency measures contained in the peace and reconciliation national charter.
