Algeria wants to review Association Agreement
Algerian authorities managed to convince the European Union (EU) to revise the Association Agreement which came into force in 2005. Europe has always expressed complaints about the controversial investment base 49/51 included in the Complementary Financial act 2009.
The EU’s approval was expressed by its High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. She said talks with Algeria will start in the next few weeks. She met with Algeria’s foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra on her visit to Algiers.
This comes as Algeria officially informed the EU representative of its will to open talks about a common assessment of tens years of work as part of the Association Agreement.
The Agreement gives to its adherents the right to revise any point in terms of political, security, economic, commercial, cultural and human aspects.
In its latest report, the EU criticized Algeria for non respect of human rights while the foreign ministry responded by a release.
Algeria remains among the countries which benefit from a small number of aid and investment projects from the EU.
Figures shows that no more than 316 project worth 7.7 billion Euros were conducted in Algeria in 2002-2014.
The Algerian request comes ten years since the Association Agreements came into force. Algeria believes that it did not the planned results due to the absence of competition equality between national and European products.
