Algerian Ait Idir paralyzed by torture in Guantanamao, says brother

Former Guantanamo Algerian detainee was paralyzed and had hemiplegia because he was violently beaten in the camp, according to his brother.

  • Abdelkader said his brother Mustapha Ait Idir has been suffering for the seven years he spent in the detention.
  •
  • “He had suffered from hemiplegia between 2004 and 2005 because about nine people tortured him to admit charged against him,” he told Echorouk.
  •
  • He added that Ait Idir arrived to Bosnia, two days ago and he is in “good mood.”
  •
  • Ait Idir went to Croatia in 1993 and worked as a designer for a magazine. In 1995, he moved to Bosnia where he got married.
  •
  • In 2005, Bosnian authorities arrested and transferred him to US government on charge of planning to attack us and British embassies in Sarajevo.
  •
  • Earlier in December, human rights organization president Farouk Ksentini said Algerians held at Guantanamo needed to take legal action against US government to claim compensation for the years they spent in jail and torture.
  •
  • Nearly 255 detainees remain at Guantanamao which was established to hold terror-suspects arrested after the September 11 attacks. Most of them have been detained for years without official charges.
  •  Obama promised to close the prison camp to move all trials to the US mainland.
