Algerian bakers calls on the trade ministry to intervene over flour’s skyrocketing prices
The spokesman of the Algerian Bakers Union Youcef Kelfat has warned in a statement made to “Echourok†against the scarcity of bread looming on the horizon due to the shortage of flour at the bakeries.
- He has indicated that the crisis was worsened owing to the rush of the consumers on the pastry goods ahead of the New Year’s Eve including Yule logs that hit record prices reaching 2000 Algerian Dinars.
- M kelfat has indicated that flour’s shortage expanded to the eastern parts of the country causing scarcity of bread that could take alarming proportions if the relevant ministry fails to supply the bakers with this strategic product.
- Our interlocutor has further noted that the flour’s prices skyrocketed on the markets reaching 2500 Algerian Dinars the quintal forcing some bakers to freeze their activities.
- M Kelfat has indicated that the bakers were not responsible for the high price of a loaf of bread that reached 20 Algerian Dinars in some areas and rather blamed those who display this product on the sidewalks.
